As of January 1, 2024, the financial landscape of the world's wealthiest individuals has witnessed dynamic shifts, with seven of the top 10 experiencing an increase in their fortunes compared to the previous month. Collectively, their wealth soared by $30 billion in December, a notable but more conservative ascent compared to the substantial $115 billion surge in November 2023.

A prominent figure in this wealth surge is Mark Zuckerberg, the founder of Facebook, who ascended from the 7th to the 5th position in the global rich list. His rise now places him ahead of Bill Gates, who had long held the title of the world's wealthiest individual.

Forbes, a reliable chronicler of the globe's billionaires since 1987, meticulously compiles an annual list that, as of earlier this year, featured 2,640 individuals. The fortunes of these billionaires are updated daily, a process influenced significantly by the fluctuations in the stock prices of companies they founded or co-founded.

The interplay between these stock values and their net worth results in the financial dynamics observed on the global stage.
As the clock struck midnight on January 1, Forbes estimates that the cumulative wealth of the world's top 10 richest people stands at a staggering $1.47 trillion, showcasing an increase from $1.44 trillion recorded just a month prior.

The most substantial gains in the past month, in dollar terms, were observed in the fortunes of Mark Zuckerberg and Bernard Arnault, the CEO of LVMH. Each experienced an impressive $9.4 billion surge in wealth, attributed to the uptick in the share prices of their respective companies.

Maintaining his position as the world's richest person, Elon Musk boasts a net worth of $251 billion. Apart from being the CEO of Tesla, Musk holds stakes in SpaceX, a privately held rocket firm, and X, formerly known as Twitter, demonstrating the diversified nature of his financial portfolio.

Bernard Arnault, a luminary in the realm of French luxury goods, had claimed the title of the world's richest person for the majority of the first half of 2023, according to Forbes. However, Musk reclaimed the top spot on June 8, 2023. As of January 1, Arnault still commands the 2nd position, boasting an estimated net worth of $200.7 billion. Arnault's influence extends as the CEO and chairman of LVMH, overseeing a conglomerate with more than 70 brands, including illustrious names such as Louis Vuitton, Christian Dior, Tiffany & Co., and Sephora.

On the other end of the spectrum, Larry Ellison, the software tycoon associated with Oracle, faced a downturn in fortunes. His net worth plummeted by $11.2 billion during December, reflecting a 10% decrease in Oracle's stock value. Despite this setback, Ellison remains in the 4th position among the world's wealthiest, with a still-substantial net worth of $135.3 billion. The ebb and flow of fortunes among these financial titans continue to shape the narrative of global wealth as we embark on the journey of the new year.

As of January 1, the 10 richest people on the planet are worth nearly $1.47 trillion—$30 billion more than a month earlier. And Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg has overtaken Bill Gates to become the world’s fifth richest person.

Billionaires at the top of the Forbes list had a pretty good December—at least in terms of their stock holdings. As of January 1, 2024, seven of the world’s top 10 richest people are wealthier than they were a month ago. Their fortunes collectively rose by $30 billion during December—a much smaller jump than the $115 billion rise during November 2023. One of the biggest gainers —Mark Zuckerberg—leaped into the No. 5 spot, up from No. 7 richest in the world on December 1. He now ranks ahead of Bill Gates, who for years was the world’s richest person.

Forbes has been keeping track of the world’s billionaires since 1987. Earlier this year, we found 2,640 of them for our annual list. Throughout the year, we update their fortunes on a daily basis. Many billionaires hold much of their net worth in the stock of the company they founded or cofounded. As that stock price moves, their fortune moves along with it.

Together the world’s 10 richest people, according to Forbes, are worth $1.47 trillion as of the strike of midnight on January 1—up from $1.44 trillion a month ago. The two biggest gainers in the past month (in dollar terms) were Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg and LVMH CEO Bernard Arnault; each is up $9.4 billion compared with December 1 due to increases in the share price of their respective companies.

Elon Musk is still the world’s richest person, worth $251 billion. The CEO of electric carmaker Tesla, Musk also owns stakes in privately held rocket firm SpaceX and social media company X, formerly known as Twitter.

For most of the first half of 2023, French luxury goods magnate Bernard Arnault was the world’s richest person, per Forbes—but that changed on June 8, 2023, when Musk overtook Arnault to become No. 1 in the world again. As of January 1, Arnault still ranks No. 2 richest, worth an estimated $200.7 billion. Arnault, the CEO and chairman of LVMH, has built the company into a giant with more than 70 brands, from Louis Vuitton and Christian Dior to Tiffany & Co. and Sephora.

Software tycoon Larry Ellison of Oracle was the biggest loser of the top ten; his fortune fell by $11.2 billion during December as Oracle’s stock fell 10%. Ellison still ranks No. 4, worth $135.3 billion.
